Who we care for and how we do it

We are the Mental Health & Learning Disability NHS Trust for County Durham and Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire, York and Selby.

From education and prevention, to crisis and specialist care — our talented and compassionate teams work in partnership with our patients, communities and partners to help the people of our region feel safe, understood, believed in and cared for.

We nurture the recovery journey of people in our care. Patients and careers have a say in how they are supported and treated because we know how important it is to listen and treat people as individuals. Our patients, their families and carers work together with us towards better mental health.

We’re committed to new thinking that improves the wellbeing of our region, and connecting with our communities and partners to deliver mental health care. We also provide mental health care within prisons, and an immigration removal centre, located in the north east, Cumbria and parts of Lancashire.

Almost 7,500 staff work across more than 90 sites, including Foss Park, a state of the art 72-bed hospital and research space in York which opened in 2020. We’re involved in cutting edge mental health research through our partnerships with universities, research funders, neighbouring NHS Trusts and other non-NHS organisations. We also sponsor prestigious national research programme grants in behavioural activation, an approach to treating depression, each in excess of £2 million.

Patients and carers are at the heart of everything we do so the emphasis is always on research which is relevant and will make a difference to the lives of local people and those we care for. That desire to improve has led to involvement in local, national and international research studies across the age span including questionnaire studies, psychological therapy, dementia sleep studies and drug trials, and a world-first COVID-19 vaccination study.

Most importantly, everything we do is guided by Our Journey to Change and our values. Our Journey to Change sets out where we want to be and how we’ll get there. It includes our goals that we co-created with patients, carers, colleagues and partners. We are working hard to embed our values and make sure everyone, in every role across our Trust, demonstrates respects and compassion and takes responsibility for the care we give.

Stichting Middin (Rijswijk, The Netherlands)
Middin
At Middin we help people with a disability or an acquired brain injury to live life to the full. We know that this can sometimes be difficult. Together with those people, their network and cooperation partners we ensure that they can do what is good for and important to them. We have been doing this for over a hundred years.
We can help with accommodation, work, learning, leisure and taking care of yourself. A little help is often all that is needed and there are many things a person can do for himself or herself. We join forces with the people who are important to someone in order to help that person. So he or she can live life to the full. We are also on hand for parents, if they need our help with raising and educating their children. Because at Middin, we are about helping people, both young and old.
A little help is often all that is needed
We help people at home, whether living independently or with Middin’s assistance. We can help with work at companies and organisations and at our own workplaces, just like at school and at our children’s day centres. We think it’s important that Midden sites are healthy places. With 3,200 employees, we help 5,700 people at 180 sites in the towns and villages of South Holland.
Our work is all about people
We provide support using methods that have been scientifically proven to work. We also conduct
research jointly with educational institutions to improve our support further. Work at Middin is all
about people, done by people who want to make a difference to someone else’s life.

Tao of Care (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

At Tao of Care, our mission is to (re)humanize individuals living with dementia. We believe that when people with dementia are primarily seen and treated as patients limited by their condition, it diminishes their sense of humanity. To counter this, Tao of Care is dedicated to changing the perception and support provided to individuals with dementia through the implementation of the Social Approach to Dementia. This approach places emphasis on the lived experiences and everyday lives of individuals with dementia and their families.
Our organization offers comprehensive training programs for teams working with individuals with dementia and their families. We also provide guidance to organizations seeking to effectively apply the Social Approach to Dementia. Despite being a small company with approximately 10-15 employees, our impact is significant, with approximately 400 to 500 individuals across the Netherlands actively working towards implementing the Social Approach in their daily practices.
Since our establishment in 2012, Tao of Care has remained committed to delivering compassionate and personalized care to more than 3000 individuals. Through our dedication, we have fostered a positive change in the way people with dementia are viewed and supported, enhancing their quality of life and promoting their well-being.
